Plantain Banana, also known as “cooking banana”, is a staple in many populations. It is grown mainly in Africa, but also in India, Malaysia, Central America and South America. The plane tree has a length of 25 to 35 cm; the green skin is thicker than the banana’s and the pulp is firmer and less sweet. As the fruit matures, the skin tends to change color to yellow and then black.
Native to the region including the Philippines, Indonesia and northern Australia, it has spread to the tropical world, Central and South America and Equatorial Africa. Uganda is currently the largest plane tree producer in the world.
